Storms, daycamp, shaping up, Jazz fest
2003-07-08 - 4:30 p.m. So, as I've mentioned, I've been biking to work every day for the last little while. This explains why the sky is currently darkening ominously, just in time for my 4:45ish ride home. They're calling for thundershowers, so this may be my last entry ever. Either that, or I'll survive a lightning strike, endure severe bipolarity for the rest of my days, and spill the contents of my delusions of grandeur/futility onto these pages. Oh wait, I'm already doing that… The kids are here this week and are attending the local day camp. Today they were quite happy to be dropped off, but yesterday was hard on the heart. I know where they were at, 'cause I used to feel the same way as a child when left to my own devices with strange children (uh, that is, children I didn't know, some of whom may well have been strange, or thought I was strange, which I was; anyway.). The same thing happened last year with Littlest, and this year it affected both of them. Can you say "parental guilt," anyone? At any rate, they seem to have settled in OK and I think they had a good time. All I know is it feels good to have them here every day, even if I've been a bit grumpy lately, due to the stresses this year has brought, and from which I don’t think I've fully recovered. Part of my strategy to beat the demons of grump is to get back into shape (hence the biking) and eat right. I've started marking down everything I eat (well, for two meals yesterday, anyway), and am trying to figure out ways to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet. I think the way to go is to have them at hand on my desk during the day. As a bonus, they could also come in handy for throwing at people. Oh, and I went back to the gym today for the first time in a very long time. 11am during summer vacation season is a breeze, I tell ya, with no waits to speak of for machines/weights. I didn't even have to venture into the locker room to bond with the other naked guys, 'cause I simply walked over in my bike-to-work outfit. (It continues to get dark by the second, as I write this, btw. Just wanted to let you know.) So aside from doing an awful lot of surfing (the Web kind, not the water kind, unfortunately), I've not been terribly busy at work, thank goodness. That will come to an end sooner rather than later, I think, but for the moment it's good to get a respite from the grind. Tonight I jam with the Original Project guys. (Oh shit, there's the thunder.) This past weekend, I went to a wedding reception/party for Miss T. She and I haven't been as close since I started working in the same building as her again, which is a shame, 'cause I miss the friendship we had. I'm not sure what went wrong, but I think it may have something to do with my never extending the courtesy of having her over to my claustrophobically crowded and messy apartment, and the fact that she's now a touch higher on the corporate ladder than I, which doesn't bother me, but perhaps bothers her, and also perhaps removes some of the levity that used to permeate our daily interaction. Hopefully we can slowly get back to being friends. But anyway, the party. The air-conditioner broke, so almost no dancing was done, though Littlest did get up and garner stares while she held Politika's and my hands and bopped to the beat. Politika looked ravishing (and ravishable) in a white and red dress, garnering her own set of stares with her dancing, which is always damned entertaining to watch, in my humble but admittedly biased opinion. Sunday the kids and her and I frolicked in the local pool, then held up the local video store so we could watch movies that night for free. (OK, I made that last thing up, we get them for free 'cause Pol used to work there.) Friday night was a night out; we ran some errands, had a meal and beer at Pub downtown, after which I promptly felt woozy. Might've been the heat, my hunger and dehydration, but I sure felt strange (more than usual). In order to walk it off, we left the car downtown and headed East along Ste-Catherine to catch the second-to-last night of the jazz fest. Pol didn't seem particularly excited about going, but sometimes I get the impression she'd just have us stay home every night if given the choice, and I kinda like having her company for things I used to have to do alone or with other couples, ya know? Anyway, the jazz fest: we saw Sharon Jones and the Dapkings, who played a sort of James Brown type funk thing that was great. She didn't do any James Brown splits or anything, but she was a womanly 145ish pounds of energy that was fun to watch. Tomorrow my company is training me on how to use my telephone. Stuff like this has always cracked me up. I mean, who needs training on how to use a phone? But apparently this new phone system is quite elaborate. It seems that our voice mail will be available on the Web as MP3s and stuff. Who'd a thunk? (Hey look the sky has cleared; looks like the Gods were smiling on me but *not* my children and Poli, who just got caught in the downpour going home :-( ) Still haven't won the lottery. Sorry bout that, Marv! *grin* Geekious entries: The time, she flies - 2005-05-05 Cool - 2005-03-07 Alone time - 2005-02-22 Music stuff - 2005-02-17 I want - 2005-02-16 (If the geeksbook doesn't work, try writing me a diaryland note.) |
