Shelter, pocket-books and tempos
2003-09-18 - 11:10 a.m.

Last night I called a friend of my sister's who is selling an upper duplex in NDG. I've been hemming and hawing (Aside: Where in the world does that expression come from? What does "hawing" mean, anyway?)... as I was saying, I've been hemming and hawing about calling the guy for months, and now that I finally have, it turns out he's just put the place on the market through an agent. (Previously, it would have been a private and less expensive sale.)

We definitely need more room than we have right now -- my hallway is cluttered with bikes, boxes, and whatever else happens to end up there -- and while this place is bigger, I'm not sure I can afford it. Anyway, the guy's supposed to call us back today about going to visit it... in fact he seemed quite enthusiastic that we come and have a look.

Now if I could just win that lottery...

Evil Ex wrote back to me yesterday and says I always put my pocket-book ahead of the kids' interests. What a burn, considering that I've managed to put aside almost a $1000 in savings for them this year in addition to paying the support required by law... Unfortunately, I'm afraid to tell her this, because I don't know if she'll find some way to demand that she gets to determine what to do with that money...

We have recorded 4 songs for the original project in click-track form; that is, rough takes put down to a drum machine rhythm, so that the substitute drummer can then record to our recorded takes, knowing they're spot on, tempo-wise. Sound confusing? Probably, but it seems like the best course of action right now, and in fact I know that a lot of professional bands do this. I'm still having trouble gauging a tempo for one of our best songs though, and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't help that the recordings we've done of it so far vary between 135 and 144 beats a minute... yikes.

A friend of mine from Calgary is supposed to be in town this weekend visiting, but I haven't heard from him in weeks. Meanwhile, Hurricane Isabel seems to be threatening to wash out our weekend here...
