You know you’re on your way to becoming an Evil Empire when...
2003-12-17 - 5:16 p.m. Last night we went to see “Love Actually.” It’s a sappy, romantic holiday comedy that does what it sets out to do perfectly. I loved it. Anyway, without giving away too much about the movie, there’s a telling scene in it involving the U.S. president that shows a) How people are starting to view the U.S., and b) How cool it would be if only someone could do something about it. David Bowie was just here last weekend, and “I’m afraid of Americans” was in his set list. Rumour has it the song got a great reaction. Wonder if he’ll be playing it in his U.S. concerts. I’m afraid of the U.S. I’m almost as afraid of them as I am of Islamic fundamentalists. Many prominent Church members in the U.S. are trying to increase their influence in what is supposed to be a secular government. Many of them want the government to be openly affiliated with the Church. Now, I’m no poli sci student and don’t really know much about this stuff, but it’s easy to see that religion and government don’t mix. How can a government represent its people if its values and policies reflect a specific sect of the population? Yet, good ol Dubya doesn’t seem to object to letting it happen. If it does happen, then the U.S. government becomes no better than the “Axis of Evil” it claims must be eliminated. It’s funny how cynical I’ve become, eh? Just a couple of years ago I’d give monstre a rough time if she said anything cynical about the U.S., and now I’m doing it. So now, does Saddam’s capture give Dubya the boost he needs to win next year’s election? Or will past precedent hold true and see the American public say “What have you done for us lately” come election time? I can only hope it’s the latter.
