Getting back to real life
2004-02-17 - 2:20 p.m.

You know, it’s weird, there is a growing distrust in the Canadian government following the latest scandal (for which, like always, no one is admitting responsibility). This sounds like a big one though, enough to perhaps motivate people to vote for someone else in the next election.

This means it’s theoretically possible that B*linda could be the next prime minister of Canada. It’s long shot, sure, but wouldn’t it be weird? They say one of her most surprising accomplishments so far is the sudden interest Canadian men are showing in politics...

I heard a rumour someone put her picture on hot-or-not dot-com, but I'm not sure I believe it.

As planned, I sat down with the banjo last Friday night. I have learned my first song. Granted, I’m not very smooth, and it takes me about 5 tries to remember how it goes (even though it’s very simple), but it’s not bad. I still think it’s a very cool instrument, and I'm somewhat surprised to hear myself actually finger-picking (not one of my strong suits).

One of the weird things about playing a new instrument is the loss of familiarity, or naturalness, that occurs. I'm so used to playing guitar that often my fingers will just jump to the next chord without my brain even thinking about it, even when I don't know the song. On banjo, forget it. I'm lost in the woods and have to memorize things by rote. Hopefully that'll change as I get more familiar with it.

I was about to practise some more last night, but opted to work out a solo for one of the songs on the original project CD. It has a flamenco/latin feel to it; I’m kinda pleased with it.

This weekend, I recorded on Saturday, then on Sunday we pissed away the day running post-wedding errands. We tried to return some wedding gifts, but were only successful with one. We tried to go pick up our registry-gifts at the department store, but were told they wouldn't have time for us (!). In fact, they were having a newly-wed brunch, which raised the question: how come we weren't invited? Fact is, a) we probably were and forgot about it, and b) even if we had been aware I doubt we would've gone.

Oh yeah, and we picked up the wedding photos taken by cf (we tried and failed to get in touch with him beforehand), in order to save him the trip and the cash necessary to pay for 'em, and, well, 'cause we wanted to see the damned pictures! :-) There are some really nice ones in there. Now I know the day really *did* happen. :-)

(Although, mysteriously, the picture of poli and cf's mom and dad dancing together for the first time in 25 years was nowhere to be found.)
