Cranky-pants and the traveling music men
2004-03-25 - 9:36 a.m. Uh, I think I need to write. I think the reason I haven't been writing is that I'm actually pretty happy. I honestly subscribe to the theory that strife begets creativity and happiness does not. I know that I've done my best musical creation when outside stress has been high. Hence the nearly total lack of musical writing I've done in the past few months. Yes, I am happy, and that's a good thing. However, this morning I'm cranky, so I might as well make use of it and update. Last night Poli sealed up the thank-you notes for the wedding without giving them a once-over to make sure all the cards are signed and in the right envelopes. I love her enthusiasm and ability to get things done and out of the way, and I just plain love her dearly, but this is one task that required attention to detail. We need to be sure that no embarrassing or insulting errors get sent out our door. After all the crap we went through with this wedding, the last thing I want is more bitching from her family because somebody got somebody else's thank you note. Now I don't know whether to open up all the envelopes and readdress them all, or just chance it and leave it. I also know that this is one of those cases where I'm being pretty anal about stuff, so I need to take a step back and figure things out. Ah, but it really won't matter in 50 years anyway, will it? In other news, we finally got back to recording last night. Between my wedding, Bass-Player's upcoming wedding, and Lead-Guitarist's sister's divorce, we've really struggled to get together lately, and we need to make a conscious effort to make time for it. Anyway, last night I put down the lead fills for one of our poppier songs. We did this in the bass player's basement, and what a difference. The acoustics were marvelous and we didn't have some suckass band next door jamming at 125dB. And it gets better – said Lead Guitarist's sister's new house will be empty and under renovation for 6 months, and it looks like we'll be able to set up shop in the basement. That means we may not have to go back to the rented local. Sweet. No more lugging stuff around, no more setting up and tearing down equipment at every session, no more musical racket next door, and no more being limited to one weeknight and one Saturday afternoon a week, with other musicians constantly "dropping by" to pick up equipment. Oh, and no more $46 a month rent. That helps. So for the next few months, feel free to kick me in the ass to keep busy with this. We've gotta get it finished, and in August there'll be a baby to take care of.
